Journey of the Turtle Photographer
A documentary about
the journey of Michael Carey, a former dive instructor and underwater
photographer / videographer who fell in love with sea turtles in the 1980s.
What was a young divers fascination of a green sea turtle swimming along the
shore off the coast of the island of Oahu soon turns into an obsession to learn
all he can about them.
What he
learns alarms him and sends him on a voyage to document the lives of sea
turtles all over the world. These ancient creatures that have swam the world's
oceans for over 110 million years are all on the brink of disappearing from the
earth forever.
On a wind
swept sandy beach somewhere in the tropics a lone female turtle struggles
ashore to begin a ritual that has been going on for millions of years.
Michael
captures this ritual of the female turtle crawling ashore, choosing her nesting
site, laying her clutch of eggs and then laboring back down the beach and into
the ocean.
From here
Michael goes back to where it all began, in Hawaii to meet with one of the
leading sea turtle physiologists in the world today, DR T. Todd Jones PhD. Together
they witness and film a very rare site at a secluded beach on the west side of
the Big Island of Hawaii. A daytime hauling out of over 20
juvenile green sea turtles. There are few places in the world where non-nesting
sea turtles crawl out during the day to rest on the beach.
From here
Michael takes viewers underwater to a turtle cleaning station where a symbiotic
relationship between reef fish and the green sea turtle exists.
Journey of
the Turtle Photographer is a personal voyage of Michael Carey. After years of
filming Michael has amassed an impressive library of sea turtle footage in
their natural environment and he wants to share the experiences of
the sights he has seen and been able to capture on film with others.
